Cabinet Card Photo of Masujima Rokuichiro taken in London
[Japan] Cabinet card portrait of Masujima Rokuichiro (1857-1948), who was one of the first Japanese men to become a barrister in England, where he lived from 1880 to 1884. He went on to establish Chuo University in Tokyo and it is said that the name Chuo (meaning centre or middle) was chosen by Masujima and another co-founder because they both studied law at Middle Temple in London. Inscribed on reverse, 'Mr. Jos[eph] Cowen Jr. with best wishes of Masujima Rokuichiro' and Masujima has signed his name in Japanese too. Cowen (1829-1900) was a well-known politician and journalist.
