The Private Collection of Mr. Yamada Baske American Art Association catalogue
[Japan] Scarce auction catalogue of a collection of art owned by the painter Yamada Baske [Basuke] (1871-c1940s?) including fifty of his own water colours. Yamada was born in Tokyo in 1871 and at the age of 16 travelled to the United States. After studying painting at an art school in New York and returning to Japan, he opened an art school called the Basuke Sketching Class in 1895 where he taught watercolour painting. Basuke primarily painted landscapes in the style of the British painter Joseph Mallord William Turner and from 1897 to 1899, he studied at the Philadelphia School of Arts and Crafts and made several round trips between Japan and the United States. In 1902, upon returning from the United States, he opened an art school called the Yokohama Sketch Club and held watercolor exhibitions. Later, at a gallery he opened in Yokohama in 1910, he sold ukiyo-e prints as well as his own works. When he held a solo exhibition in New York in 1928, local newspapers praised his landscape paintings, which were characterized by an ephemeral atmosphere evoked by twilight, fog, and shadows. He is believed to have passed away sometime after 1938.
