Large Format Photo of Kojigoku in Shimabara with Shimoda Hotel visible
[Japan] Scarce, hand-coloured albumen print photo of the Shinyu area in Unzen. The large building in the centre is the Shimoda Hotel, which was built by Shimoda Genhachiro and opened in 1888. It was the first Western-style hotel in Kyushu outside Nagasaki city. Sadly, the building burnt down in 1906. Titled in negative at lower right, 'KOJIGOKU, SHIMABARA'.
