Residential Rhymes by Osman Edwards Large format crepe paper book
[Japan] Arguably Hasegawa's most beautiful publication and also one of the most beautiful woodblock printed books published in Meiji Japan. Eight different Meiji era Western characters are depicted, namely: The Merchant at Yokohama, The Missionary at Karuizawa, The Minister at Chiuzenji [sic] [this is believed to be an illustration of Ernest Mason Satow], The Globe-trotter at Kamakura, The Journalist at Kobe [who is shown being arrested by police], The Painter at Miyajima, The Captain at Shimabara, and The Professor in Nirvana. The book is 'Sympathecally [sic] dedicated to foreigners in Japan'.
