The Japanese Expedition to Formosa by Edward H. House
[Japan] Very scarce on the market. Edward Howard House (1834-1901) was the only foreign journalist permitted to accompany the Japanese military in their Taiwanese Expedition of 1874, which was an attempt by the Japanese to punish indigenous people of Taiwan who had killed a group of 54 merchants from Ryukyu (present-day Okinawa) whose ship had blown off course and landed at the southern tip of Taiwan. This is Ernest Mason Satow's personal copy of the book and also has a small sticker of the Yokohama-based bookseller, F.R. Wetmore inside the front cover.
