[Japan] Woodblock print of a retinue passing through the then small town of Kanagawa near Yokohama. We can see the shopkeepers bowing as the large group passes by. Toyokuni III aka Kunisada I (1786-1865) was one of the most prolific and popular ukiyoe artists in the 19th century. This print is from a series depicting the 14th Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi's journey to Kyoto in 1863 (Bunkyū 3). Also known as “The Imperial Journey to Kyoto via the Tōkaidō” or “Famous Views Along the Tōkaidō.

 

Single sheet as issued. 1863.

 

35.3 x 24cm.

 

Im very good condition. Left margin slightly trimmed. A little grubby at lower left edge. Unbacked with nice bleedthrough. Some small remnants of paper on rear indicating it was probably mounted at one time. u37112000
