Kobe Church - Unrecorded Crepe Paper Book A request for funds to build a church in Kobe

[Japan] An important discovery in the world of Japanese crepe paper books. This is an appeal by church leaders in Kobe for funds to build a church there. The booklet gives a brief outline of Kobe and the city's potential and directs readers to send cheques to the 'Kobe Church building fund' at HSBC in New York. Donations will be acknowledged by Rev. S Swann M.A. (Chaplain) Kobe, Japan. Cheqes can also be sent to a Dr. W.W. Baldwin in Toronto, Canada. According to an entry (summarised) on the Cumbrian Lives website, 'Sidney Bellingham Swann (1862-1942) was born at Weymouth, England and educated at Marlborough, taking his BA at Trinity Hall, Cambridge and his MA in 1888. Swann was an outstanding athlete, rowing in the Oxford and Cambridge boat races in 1883, 84 and 85. He was ordained Deacon in 1885 and priest the following year. From 1890-95 he was a missionary at Fukuyama, Japan and from 1895-96 was Chaplain to the English Congregation at Kobe.' At the end of the text there is a note that states, 'This appeal has been privately subscribed for, and is not printed out of the funds. But it has cost 20 cents a copy, postage included; So if you are interested and yet unable to help us further, even that amount will be gratefully received.'
