[Japan] Nicely drawn and coloured, original illustration showing the first official visit to Japan by Perry with his so-called black ships and the Japanese officials and soldiers gathered on shore to meet them. The text mentions 1853 and the arrival of the ships off Uraga in July of that year (actually the 6th month according to the Japanese calendar at the time). The illustration was done in October 1853 by Masatane (or Masatsugu) about whom we haven't discovered any information.

 

Illustration measures 37 x 65cm and scroll 68.7 x 134cm.

 

In good to very good condition. Some age wear and marks. Minor creasing. s37101986
