Medium Format Photo of the British Consulate in Yokohama Attributed to Michael Moser
[Japan] Scarce photo showing the controversial, newly-built British consulate in Yokohama. This photo appeared in the July 17, 1871 issue of The Far East. The publisher, John Reddie Black states, 'If the English government had it in contemplation to give the Japanese a specimen of the utter want of taste with which foreigners can put up, in the matter of architecture, they could not have succeeded better than they have done in accepting the plans of Major Crossman of the Royal Engineers, for the British Consulate in Yokohama. We used to think that the Shanghai Club was the ugliest building in the East, but our Consulate surpasses it out and out. We do not think we do the architect justice in presenting a side and back view instead of the front, but our excuse is that the view we give is a little less bare as a picture...'
