CDV of Rev. Henry Martyn Scudder taken in New York

[Japan] Henry Martyn Scudder (1822-1895) was a missionary with the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions and member of the well-known Scudder family who served in India for five generations. He was born in Sri Lanka and was the eldest son of John Scudder, Sr., the first American medical missionary to India. He went to the US at the age of 10 for schooling. At 21 he was ordained by the ABCFM and was sent to India, where he worked from 1844 to 1850. He also studied medicine at Madras Medical College, in addition to his missionary activity. He returned to the US in 1864 because of ill health and became a pastor in San Francisco. He held pastorates in New Jersey, New York, and Illinois. From 1887 to 1889 he worked in Japan and died in 1895 in Massachusetts. This photo was most likely taken in the mid to late 1860s when he was in New York.
