Medium format photo of the US Consulate in Yokohama Attributed to Michael Moser

[Japan] This photo was used in the February 16th, 1871 issue of John Reddie Black's publication, 'The Far East' so we can be sure the photo was taken prior to that date. It would appear to be one of the earliest photos taken of the US Consulate in Yokohama. Writing about the photo and consulate, Black states, 'This building is directly opposite the Saibansho [Court house]; and contains under its roof, the Consular Court room; Consular offices; U.S. Post office; and the private residence of the Consul.' And, '....Whilst speaking of the Consulate, we may say a word of the Consul - Mr. Lyon [Lemuel Lyon (February 2, 1806 - April 6, 1871) was appointed Consul at Kanagawa in 1869 and died just two months after the photo was taken]. He is a man who has given strong and repeated evidence that his main desire is to do justice, and act uprightly in his office, as his immediate predecessor had done. And so far as the community at large is concerned, it has benefited by his vigorous dealing with the "loafers", who still abound, but not to anything like the extent they did on his arrival. In 1870, he sent upwards of 100 out of the settlement, shipping them to America, where they would be able to find work if they were willing to accept it.'
