The ABC of Go - The National War Game of Japan by W. A. de Havilland

[Japan] Walter Augustus de Havilland (1872-1968) came to Japan in 1893 and taught English in Hakodate, Kobe (from 1896) and Kanazawa (1898) before moving to Tokyo in 1904. He resigned from the Tokyo Higher Normal School in 1906 (Meiji 39) and opened a patent office in Tokyo. De Havilland later became professor of Law at Waseda University. Longevity ran in the family as he was the father of movie stars Olivia de Havilland (1916-2020) and Joan Fontaine (1917-2013) who were both born in Tokyo. The game of go, or igo, takes a lot of time and study to master and it seems de Havilland became quite obsessed with the game. Although not the first Westerner to take up the game, he was apparently the first who played with a reasonably high level of skill.
