Large Manuscript Map of the Foreign Residences of Yokohama based on Sadahide work with names of residents shown

[Japan] Monumental, hand drawn and coloured map showing the area of Yokohama where the first Westerners lived around 1861. It is based on a woodblock printed map that was made by Gountei Sadahide (1807-c1879), who was presumably commissioned by the bakufu to produce the work so that the authorities knew who was living where. Residents' family names are written in katakana and some are difficult to decipher but many can be read and include the names of the earliest foreign residents of Japan in Yokohama. Nationalities (American, English, Dutch or French) are also provided. Some of the identifiable names include [Raphael] Schoyer, [James] Barber, [Charles] Thorel, [Wilhelm] Patow, [Eduard] Schnell, [Petrus] Batteke, [William] Kemptner, [William] Howell, [Christopher] Elmstone, [Duane B.] Simmons, [Francis] Hall, [Henry] Moss, [Thomas] Baker, [James C.] Fraser, [C.T. Assendelft de] Coningh, [Henry] Marks, Peter Stuyt, Eugene van Reed, Edward S. Benson, H. Ledermann, possibly Hendrik Bruyn, [George M. (or W.)] Bates, [Hendrik] Frey, and possibly [William] Strachan. The cemetery for foreigners can be seen at upper left and we can see the large pyramidal shaped grave of Wessel De Vos and Jasper Nanning Dekker, two Dutch men who were killed in Yokohama in 1860 and probably the grave for Russian sailors killed in 1859.

A very important map in the history of Japan and her relations with the West.

Unknown artist. No date but most likely a contemporary, hand drawn copy of Sadahide's work.
