Calendar for 1906 scarce Yamamoto work made for O. Kai & Co., San Francisco
[Japan] Crepe paper calendar for 1906 that was made for O. Kai & Co, an importer of Japanese good and novelties based in San Francisco in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The company was established in 1885 by Kai Orie, who settled there and whose descendants are still living in the US. The cover page and last leaf have a small stamp of Yamamoto, which was presumably the company that produced this calendar for O. Kai & Co. The rear has the company stamp of 'O. Kai & Co. Emporium of Japanese Goods &c. 88 Kearney Street, San Francisco'. Kai moved his store to China Town after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake (the year of this calendar) so it would seem higly unlikely that many of these calendars survived. This is the first crepe paper calendar related to O. Kai & Co. that we have found.
[Tokyo?]. Yamamoto/ O. Kai & Co. [probably 1905].
8 leaves. 14.8 x 10.4cm.
In very good condition. Covers slightly toned. Minor age wear only. A few small dents on rear cover. Internally fine. nb37020006
