Scarce photo of Western lady from the Yokohama studio of David Welsh

[Japan] Important photo of a Western lady in Japanese dress with a small dog at her feet. The photo was taken by the elusive studio of David Welsh of which, according to Terry Bennett's research on Welsh in his groundbreaking book, 'Photography in Japan 1853 - 1912' (Tuttle, 2006), there are only two known photographs from the shortlived studio in Yokohama (see pp.156-157 for more information). The size of this photo is also very unusual as it measures 14.5 x 22.9cm. Mounted on Welsh's studio card, 'D. Welsh & Co. Photographic Studio. Silk Parlour & Fine art Store. No.39, Yokohama'.

Yokohama. David Welsh & Co. c1891.

14.5 x 22.9cm.

In good condition. Some age wear and toning. Mount a little chipped at corners. Two small pin holes at upper right and lower right corners. Otherwise good. p37041852
