Thoughts and Essays by Nitobe Inazo with Nitobe's signature

[Japan] From the collection of Augustin Sylvester Macdonald (1865-1959) with his bookplate and handwritten name along with some pencil notes presumably by Macdonald (one quoting Theodore Roosevelt stating, 'Much may be learned from Japan'). The front endpaper has had four small slits made and a small card signed, 'Yours truly, Inazo Nitobe', has been neatly inserted there. Presumably Macdonald met Nitobe at some point. Nitobe Inazo (1862-1933) wrote the very well-known book 'Bushido' and ended up becoming the Deputy Secretary-General of the League of Nations. He married an American lady named Mary Patterson Elkington (1857-1938) in 1891. There is also a small newspaper cutting dated Feb. 1927 pinned to the title page mentioning that Nitobe will shortly be arriving in San Francisco as a 'Peace adviser'.

Tokyo. Teibi Publishing Company. 1909 (Japanese colophon states this is a 1910 revised edition).

pp. [4], vi[2], 394, [4]. 19.2 x 13cm.

In very good condition. Staining to inside front cover and fep. Dedication page with some damage near binding. Newspaper cutting browned. Otherwise very good with only a hint of age wear. b37031839
