Woodblock Print of King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy by Utagawa Yoshitsuya

[Japan] From a series of prints titled, 'Bankoku Jimbutsu Zue' [Illustrations of Foreign Barbarians'], this fascinating woodblock print by Yoshitsuya (1822-1866) depicts the King of Italy, Victor Emmanuel II (1820-1878). Presumably it was produced because, in 1861, Italy was newly independent and the monarch had just become King of all Italy (previously he was King of Sardinia). The print is subtitled, 'Itariya Kokuo' ['King of Italy'].

Edo [Tokyo]. Ebiya Rinnosuke. January 1861.

36 x 24.8cm.

In good condition. Some age wear, marks and a few old repairs. Unbacked with nice bleedthrough. u37021818
