The Japanese Syllabary published by the Yokohama Bible Press
[Japan] Very scarce booklet showing the variations of Japanese characters used in writing. Presumably this was designed to help Western missionaries when translating and publishing written work in Japanese. Printed by William P. Brown and according to the Meiji Portraits website, '....he lived in Japan only in 1874 and 1875 and worked as an independent printer and dealer in curiosities in Yokohama #80, but by 1876 he was no longer listed in Japan.' However, according to the existence of this booklet, it would seem that Brown was still in Japan in 1883 (or had returned to Japan by 1883). Inscribed in pen on cover by Brown to someone but name is difficult to decipher.
