Pair of Stereoview Photos of the Japanese Court taken at the London International Exhibition
[Japan] Very nice pair of stereoview photos showing some of the Japanese exhibits at the London International Exhibition held from May to November in 1862. This was the first exhibition of Japanese arts and products ever shown outside Japan, although the items displayed were selected from the collection of Rutherford Alcock (1809-1897), who was the first British Consul-General and Minister Plenipotentiary in Japan (1858-1865). Apparently the Japanese members of the 1862 Embassy to Europe were not very impressed with the items chosen. Each stereoview is titled: ('No.24 - View in the Japanese Court', and 'No. 74 - View in the Japanese Court (2)')
London. London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company. 1862.
Both in very good condition with minor age wear. The photos themselves are very good with nice contrast. One card has a stamp of R.W.Richards on the rear and some writing in the centre. The other card is blank on the rear. p37021809
