Large Format Photo of the Rokumeikan Tokyo Stunning photo of the famous building
[Japan] The Rokumeikan was built by British architect Josiah Conder (1852-1920) in 1883 at the request of the Japanese government. The impressive building created some controversy but served its purpose as a venue for lavish parties and other formal gatherings. When the Imperial Hotel opened in 1890, the Rokumeikan became less necessary and it was sold that year. In 1894 it was damaged in an earthquake and Conder was asked to help repair the building. It was then used by the Peers' Club until being demolished in 1941. Numbered '309' at lower right in negative.
