La Journée d'un Policeman a Tokio Impressive work by Georges Bigot
[Japan] One of the scarcer works by Georges Bigot (1860-1927) who lived in Japan from 1882-1899 and produced some wonderful books of etchings like this one. According to Wenckstern, the Police Department banned Bigot's book titled, 'Albums Humouristiques de la Vie Japonaise', so it is quite probably that this book, 'La Journée d'un Policeman a Tokio - Album humouristique' may have ruffled some feathers, too. The etchings are very expressive and Bigot cleverly shows us the range of issues a policeman in Japan in 1891 had to deal with. From drunk people to suicides to stopping dogs from defecating, the police had their hands full. Each illustration captioned in French. Standard copies were 2 yen and copies numbered 1 to 100 were 5 yen. This copy appears to be unnumbered.
