CDV of Ichiki Shonojo (Rokuzaemon) Only known photograph of Saigo Takamori's brother-in-law
[Japan] Historically important carte de visite photo of Ichiki Shonojo (1822-1874), a Satsuma samurai who married Koto, the younger sister of Saigo Takamori. He also used the given name Rokuzaemon and was apparently very close to Saigo and wrote numerous letters to him. He travelled to Europe as part of the Satsuma mission at the Paris World Exposition in 1867. We believe this the first photo of Ichiki to have ever been found. Inscribed on rear in Japanese 'Ichiki' and 'Itikou Rokouzayemon' [Ichiki Rokouzaemon].
Paris. Pierre Petit. [1867].
