Cabinet Card Photo of the U.S.S. Swatara and officers taken in Yokohama by Suzuki Shin'ichi
[Japan] Very nice cabinet card that is a composite image of the officers of the US Navy vessel, USS Swatara on one of her visits to Yokohama. The USS Swatara was launched in 1873 though she was actually a complete rebuild of another vessel named USS Swatara first built in 1865. She was eventually sold for scrap in 1896 in San Francisco. The captain of the vessel in the photo (at top centre) is Commander William Thomas Sampson (1840-1902) served on the USS Swatara until October 1881. Inscribed on rear, 'Officers. U.S.S. "Swatara" 1881'.
