Sokuryō Shinshiki - 2 vols complete based on work of British civil engineer, John England
[Japan] Very interesting pair of books designed to instruct Japanese engineers about land surveying and trigonometry by Fukuda Han and Hanai Shizuka. Fukuda Han, also known as Jiken, was born in Osaka and was the son of Fukuda Riken (1815–1889), a specialist in indigenous Japanese mathematics. He studied under his father and also received training in Western knowledge under Satō Masayasu (1821–1877). While teaching at his private school, Fukuda worked in the field of surveying at the Ministry of Civil Affairs, and Ministry of Public Works' Railway Bureau, where he learned surveying knowledge from an Englishman employed by the Japan Railway Bureau named John England (1822-1877), and wrote the present two volumes. Interestingly, volume 1 is bound Japanese-style with the binding on the right, but volume 2 (with the trigonometric tables) is bound on the left.
