Woodblock print with actual photo Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro IX

[Japan] A very interesting woodblock print that appears to bridge the era of ukiyoe or nishikie with the era of photography. Japanese people would buy woodblock prints because they were a snapshot of life and this particular is the first we have found that has an actual photo affixed to it, presumably as issued. Titled, 'Haiyū Shashin Kurabe' ['A Comparison of Photos of Actors'], the print is also dated at the bottom. It is tempting to think the photo was taken by Uchida Kuichi, as he was well known for such photos of kabuki actors, but he died the year before the print was published. Of course it is possible the photo was taken by him and used after he died. The artist of the print is not indicated.

Tokyo. Yamamoto Rihei. 1876.

37.6 x 25.5cm.

As can be seen, the print has some old red stains at top and bottom. Some wear and small chips along lower edge. Unbacked and the stain can be seen on the rear. The photo itself is in very good condition. u36031566
