Cabinet Card of Jokichi Uchida student of Cornell College
[Japan] Interesting photo of a Japanese man in the US. Inscribed on rear, 'Junichi Uchida, a man from Japan, who goes to school at Cornell.' Two words below that are illegible. Then in another hand below, 'Jokichi Machida [Uchida mistakenly copied as Machida], A man from Japan who goes to school at Cornel [sic] Univ.' A February 18, 1895 newspaper article from the Cedar Rapids, Iowa newspaper, The Gazette, mentions that Uchida was from Miyazaki prefecture in Japan and gave an address on Christianity in Japan the Sino-Japanese War and that he is, '.....at present a sophomore in Cornell college, Mt. Vernon [Iowa] where he arrived in the fall of 1893 and where he will complete the course' and also that, '.....he came to Cornell college through the instrumentality of Rev. Fulkerson, a Methodist minister and a teacher in the mission school.'
