Stereoview Photo of Nagasaki Hospital Medical Doctors by Wilhelm Burger

[Japan] Extremely scarce and unusual stereroview photo showing young doctors in Nagasaki relaxing together. A sake cup on the floor in front of them may explain the friendly behaviour that can be seen with one of the young men with his hand on the kimono of the man next to him. Numbered 241 and titled at the lower left of the mount, 'Doctoren aus dem Hospital von Nagasaki'. Wilhelm Burger (1844-1920) went to Japan with the Austria-Hungary mission and stayed in Nagasaki for just two weeks in September 1869 before travelling to Yokohama and then left Japan in March 1870. This particular stereoview is not listed in Terry Bennett's informative work, 'Old Japanese Photographs - Collector's Data Guide' (p.109), making it exceedingly scarce and most likely heretofore unknown.

No Place. Wilhelm Burger. 1869.

In good condition. Some marks on each image but the photos are sharp. Inscribed on rear in Portuguese, 'Doctors del Hospital de Nagasaqui Japō 1870'. p35121507
