Woodblock Printed Map of Shimoda Port Large, coloured and dated map
[Japan] Impressive map of Shimoda and its surrounds. Published in the wake of the Perry missions to Japan in 1853 and 1854. Gyokusenji Temple in Shimoda was designated as the location for the United States' first consulate with Townsend Harris and Henry Heusken living there from 1856 before relocating to Azabu (Tokyo) in 1859. The map is titled in Japanese, 'Zushu Shimoda Minato no Zu' ['Map of Shimoda Port in Izu Province'].

Measures approx. 75 x 51cm (19 x 12.9cm when folded).
In very good condition. Old worm trails mostly near folds have been professionally repaired with Japanese paper. General age wear. Original title slip present. m35061425
