Woodblock Printed Advertisement for Canemori Mise Hakodate Watanabe Kumashiro

[Japan] Large, woodblock printed advertisement showing the main building of the Canemori Mise [Kanemori Store] in Hakodate. Signs on the building list some of the products they sold, including chicken curry, liquor, and other foodstuffs. Kanemori was founded by Watanabe Kumashiro in 1869 and he imported, bought and sold a wide range of products. An almost identical print is known to be dated 1880, so ours most likely dates a little later than that. Although the printing quality is a bit basic, it is a scarce item. There is an artist signature on the right but we haven't been able to decipher it. The warehouses he opened later are a tourist attraction in Hakodate today and the final (website) image shows the building today.

No place [Hakodate?]. Watanabe Kumashiro. c1880.

One oban sheet. 25.1 x 37.2cm.

In very good condition. Minor wear and some marks in margins. A few minor repairs that are almost unnoticeable. Otherwise very good. u35061423
