[Japan] From the series, 'Kaika Ninso Kagami - Benkyo' ['A Mirror of Modern Customs - Study'], this very nice woodblock print shows a lady reading a book in a Western language. With Japan's quite speedy modernisation, more and more Japanese people were eager to learn foreign languages. Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) was considered to be one of the last masters of ukiyoe.
