Japanese Words & Phrases, For the Use of Strangers by Adolfo Farsari

[Japan] For sale by Kelly & Walsh, Ltd. Very scarce phrasebook for the use of visitors (strangers) to Japan. Farsari mentions in the preface that the first six editions sold so quickly he produced this, 'much more complete' seventh edition. All editions appear to be difficult to find. The Italian photographer, Adolfo Farsari (1841-98) moved to Yokohama in around 1873 and opened a studio there. He published various guides and maps alongside his bustling photography business. A number of interesting advertisements can also be found in the book. A number of leaves are blank as issued, probably for the user to write notes.
