L'Aquarelliste Japonais - 4 issues Each issue with 9 hand-painted watercolours
[Japan] This most likely short-lived publication appears to be almost unrecorded. According to the cover, copies were available on the 1st and 15th of each month and were on sale at Peyre Freres in Yokohama. The Peyre brothers ran a hotel and then confectionery shop in Yokohama at the same No. 85 [Main Street] address shown on the covers of each issue. Presumably Georges Daigremont was based in Paris but there was a French military man named Higue G. Daigremont in Japan from around 1891-93, so it is possible he may have been involved if he was a relative of Georges. All text is in French and each issue was almost certainly produced in Japan, based on the paper used and binding. Our 4 issues are dated 1st April, 1st May, 15th June, and 1st July, 1890. Above the title at left, each has '1st year' written. Subscriptions were also available but it seems very few copies were produced as it would have been an expensive to insert original illustrations on each page. Artists include Okubo Ichigaku (1845-1891), Saijo Hosui, Tominaga, Nakamura, Fujita Issen, Ota, and Yamada.
[No place][Yokohama?]. Georges Daigremont. 1890.
1st April issue is slightly larger at 32.5 x 23.5cm than the other three issues 31.2 x 23.1cm.
All in good to very good condition except for the 1st May issue which has some noticeable holes on the cover along with an old damp stain that affects basically all pages. b34111284
