Japanese Proverbs and Pictures Selected and edited by Frederick Starr

[Japan] This lovely book by Starr (1858-1933), who became quite fascinated by Japan, was published after his 1909-10 visit there. A difficult book to find these days, the covers have crepe paper covered boards, with the pages inside all woodblock printed on fine Japanese paper. The font used looks very similar to the original font Hasegawa Takejiro made for some of the books he published but there is no mention of Hasegawa. Made to look like it is bound fukurotoji (pocket) style but the pages are actually glued together at the edge as issued.

Tokyo and Chicago. Frederick Starr. 1910. (Printed by H. Hattori, Tokyo)

56pp (incl. 50 pages of illustrations and proverbs). 18.3 x 18cm.

In fair to good condition. Covers with wear, marks and some chipping at edges. Rear cover with old stain affecting inside rear cover. Final page with some loss at edge. Otherwise good only. nb33080002
