The Ogres of Oyeyama Very scarce plain paper edition

Japanese Fairy Tale Series No. 19 told in English by Mrs. T.H. James. Kobunsha, Tokyo. Kelly & Walsh, Yokohama.

Hasegawa published the first 18 fairy tales on plain paper between 1885 and 1888 and then made quite a quick transition to crepe paper editions. It would be three years before Hasegawa decided to produce No. 19 (1891) and No. 20 (1892). Probably because of this it seems very few plain paper editions of Nos. 19 and 20 were ever published. In this book, Nos.19 and 20 are listed in the rear as being 'In the press'. Virtually unheard of in the market and some even wondered if they actually existed. Here is proof that No. 19 certainly does (we also recently found No.20 on plain paper too).

Tokyo. Hasegawa Takejiro. 1891.

32pp. 18.2 x 12.4cm.

In very good condition. Minor wear at edges and corners. Small pencilled number on title page and minor abrasion in top margin. Neat initials, 'M.K.' written inside at top of rear cover.
