Catalog of Wood-Cut Color Prints by Contemporary Japanese Artists

 

Compiled and Published by S. Watanabe Color Prints Co. Ginza, Tokyo, Japan. 1951.

 

One coloured, woodblock print tipped in as issued. Covers also appear to be woodblock printed. Important reference for hundreds of woodblock prints for shin hanga print collectors of these artists: Shinsui (77 prints), Hasui (336 prints), Takashi (15), Shiro (49), Shoson (83), Shunsen (54), Hiroaki Shotei (18), Kazuma (9), Koitsu (21), Eisho (4), Konen (2), Kiyoshi (1), Hakuho (4), Koitsu (10), Kokan (3), Gyokusei (21), Tadamasa (26), and Gakusui (10). Contains a brief biography of each artist and also has images of Kawase Hasui at work. An earlier catalogue was published in 1936 that contained new prints from recut blocks as a result of the 1923 Kanto earthquake. Many wood blocks were also lost in WWII and this 1951 catalogue is the first post-War catalogue by Watanabe. The business is still in operation in Ginza, Tokyo.

In very good condition. Wear to covers and corners a little bent. Stapled binding visible at rear but binding is firm. Minor splitting at top and bottom of spine. Internally very good. b32120778
