CDV of Shimazu Hisamitsu (aka Shimazu Saburo) The man whose soldiers killed Richardson in the Namamugi Incident
[Japan]. Very scarce photo of the most powerful member of the Satsuma domain at the time, Shimazu Hisamitsu (1817-1887), the younger brother of Shimazu Nariakira. Apparently taken when he visited Osaka castle in 1867. Shimazu became even more well known when, in 1862, his retinue was returning from Edo (now Tokyo) and passed a group of Westerners who failed to make way. Considering this disrepectful, his soldiers attacked them and killed Charles Lenox Richardson near the village of Namamugi in what became known as the Namamugi Incident.
Osaka. Photographer unknown. 1867.
9.0 x 5.3cm.
