Large Format Kimono Design Manuscript containing a very unusual militaristic design
Interesting hand-drawn and coloured book containing 22 kimono designs. The military-style designs stands out because it is so different from the other 21 designs. Probably produced around the time of the Sino-Japanese War (1895-96) or the Russo-Japanese War (1905-06) but possibly earlier. 'Hadano Gofukuten' ['Hadano Clothing Store'] written on rear cover and 'Moyohon' ['Design Book'] on front cover.
Probably Kyoto. c1900. 22 leaves. 39 x 27.7cm
Covers are worn, chipped with some minor loss. Corners bent. Manuscript has been folded across at some point so there is a light crease running across the centre. Designs are all very good except for one that seems to have been splattered with white paint. The snow scene design also has a similar look but this may be part of the design. More recent stamp of 'Factory Jun' and Kyoto phone number on front cover. m31120431
