Earliest known photo taken of the temple, Zenpukuji, used by Townsend Harris from 1859 for the first US Legation. Titled, 'Views in Japan'  and numbered '64', then 'Jeda [Yedo i.e. Tokyo] The Emperors' Temple, at Jeda. There are upwards of a hundred different temples at Jeda, and none higher or larger than this - high buildings being liable to be destroyed by the frequest occurrence of earthquakes.'

Mount measures 17.4 x 8.5cm.

 

In very good condition with only a few very minor marks.
