Painted scroll showing Dutch group having meal Seal of Shirai Itoku

Wonderful painting with seal of Shirai Itoku 白井惟徳 (1762-1838), who was a doctor from Kyoto. He also used the name Sekisui (赤水) and studied medicine under Fukui Futei 福井楓亭 (1725-92). Not much is known about Shirai but he studied medicine with the Dutch at some point. This hand painted scroll gives us a glimpse into the lives of the Dutch in Dejima. We see an African servant pouring wine for one of the Dutch men as well as a lady holding a baby. Shirai's seal is stamped on the right.

Scroll measures 134 x 57.5cm and painting itself 55.5 x 45cm.

Very good condition with some minor wear and marks. Mounted on later scroll. Housed in custom made box.
