Edited for The Board of Missions of The Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States of America by the Secretaries and General Agents of The Two Committees. Includes a letter of Nov. 1859 about Japan written on board the USS Powhatan and a list of the missionaries in Shanghai (including Rev. E.W. Syle and Rev. Samuel I.J. Schereschewsky who later came to Japan), as well as the first three Protestant missionaries in Nagasaki, Rev. John Liggins, Rev. Channing Moore Williams, and H. Ernst Schmit, M.D.
